How to Keep Your Job

The unemployment rate could rise in the months ahead, and you don't want to be a statistic. Three experts in workplace navigation offer their tips for hanging on to your job.

Barbara Davis - Founder of Barbara Davis Employment Services, with offices in Red Bank and Freehold.

"Your have a better chance of keeping your job if you make yourself invaluable to your boss and to the business, " Davis said. "Go above and beyond your job and be versatile and knowledgeable so that you can suggest ways to improve the business."

And consider a transfer to the staff of a key, high-level executive. "If there's a downsizing, they're not going to get rid of a valuable and productive executive," she said - and a powerful boss might protect your job, too.

There is no harm in letting your passion for the job show, Davis said. "That helps everyone around you be excited and enthusiastic. Companies don't like to fire team players, because they help motivate others."
